For many Americans, the growth of cities, the rise of a consumer culture, the upsurge of mass entertainment, and the so-called "revolution in morals and manners" represented liberation from the restrictions of the country's Victorian past.

But for many others, the United States seemed to be changing in undesirable ways. The result was a thinly veiled "cultural civil war," in which a pluralistic society clashed bitterly over such issues as foreign immigration, evolution, the Ku Klux Klan, prohibition, women's roles, and race.

Essential questions: Why did the U.S. experience so much political and social change during the 1920s? Why did the 1920s see the emergence of the “consumer society”? What issues led to Prohibition in the 1920s, and what problems contributed to its failure?

The 1920s, the frothy decade following World War I, have been called the era of Wonderful Nonsense. Weary of war and politics, connected by radio and wire, and with more money on their hands than ever before, Americans threw themselves into fads and crazes.

The 1920s have been called the Roaring Twenties, the Age of Intolerance, the Jazz Age, and the Age of Wonderful Nonsense. The people of the 20s were known as the Lost Generation. The fact that one ten-year span generated so many colorful labels is a clue to the spirit of the era.

The 1920s have been called an “Age of Intolerance” that manifested itself in nativism and racism, xenophobia and anti-modernism, anti-Semitism and anti-Catholicism, the Red Scare and increased Ku Klux Klan membership. History reveals that such acts of intolerance have not been limited to the 1920s, however.

The Roaring Twenties were a Jazz Age burst of prosperity and freedom for flappers and others during the Prohibition era, until the economy crashed in 1929.
