Beanium has three isotopes (white, brown, and speckeled) which have different masses and different percent abundances. Students counted and massed the beans in order to calculate average masses of the beans, percent abundance values, and eventually, average atomic mass.

The four isotopes of beanium (lima-beanium, pinto-beanium, kidney-beanium, and black-eyed pea beanium) all contribute to the average atomic mass of beanium ing to their individual masses and the percent occurrence of each.

Like isotopes of an element, beans of one variety have individual masses that are very similar, but not identical. Like atoms of different elements, beans of different types have different average masses. You will measure equal number of beans of different varieties to derive a bean mass unit (BMU).

The purpose of this lab is to calculate the average atomic mass using beans, and to observe the difference between isotopes.

The atomic mass of beanium sample was calculated using Average mass one bean, divide the total mass of the black beans by the total number of black beans, and divide the number of each isotope (color bean) by the total number of particles to get the percent abundance (beans). To get %, multiply this by 100.
