Venogram. A venogram uses X-rays and a contrast dye to create images of leg veins. It allows your doctor to check for blood clots or pooling, which can occur when valves in the veins stop working properly.

Initial evaluation begins in the office setting with a thorough history and physical examination. Typical symptoms of venous insufficiency include aching, pain, tightness, skin irritation, pruritus, heaviness, tingling, muscle cramps, and cosmetically unsatisfying varicose veins.

What are the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency? Swelling in your legs or ankles. Tight feeling in your calves or itchy, painful legs. Pain when walking that stops when you rest. Brown-colored skin, often near the ankles. Varicose veins. Leg ulcers that are sometimes hard to treat.

A venous Doppler ultrasound is a diagnostic test used to check the circulation in the large veins in the legs (or sometimes the arms). This exam shows any blockage in the veins by a blood clot or “thrombus” formation.

Symptoms of venous disease include: Varicose Veins: enlarged, swollen, knotted clusters of purple veins; edema (swelling in the legs); aching or a sensation of heaviness in the legs; itching skin above the affected veins; skin discoloration and ulcers on the inner aspect of the ankles (in advanced cases).

Your doctor can diagnose venous insufficiency by examining your legs and by using a type of ultrasound test (duplex Doppler) to find out how well blood is flowing in your legs.

Diagnosis of Varicose Veins Varicose veins can usually be diagnosed by a simple physical examination; however, the cause of the varicose vein requires the use of Doppler (Duplex) ultrasound. This painless test assesses the valve function in the groin, and can also determine how much blood is flowing back into the legs.

The history of venous disease goes back to the beginning of medicine. Early writings on varicose veins and treatments for them were written as early as 1550 BC. One of the oldest illustrations of a varicose vein is located at the base of the Acropolis in Athens and dates to the fourth century BC.
