Grasshoppers are medium to large insects. Adult length is 1 to 7 cm, depending on the species. Like their relatives the katydids and crickets, they have chewing mouthparts, two pairs of wings, one narrow and tough, the other wide and flexible, and long hind legs for jumping.

The pronotum situated just behind the head is a prominent, saddle-shaped structure with lateral lobes that hide nearly all of the propleura (Fig. 4). The pronotum has many distinctive features useful in separating both genera and species of grasshoppers.

Thorax: The body section after the head, with the legs and wings attached. There are three sections of the thorax: the prothorax, the mesothorax, and the metathorax. Abdomen: The posterior section of the body containing the reproductive and digestive organs. Spiracles: Breathing pores.

The food is stored in the crop. Next, food moves into the gizzard, where teeth made of chitin grind it up further. Food then moves through the stomach into the intestines where glands digest the food and other structures absorb the digested food.

Like all other insects, grasshoppers have six legs. They use all six for walking. The front two legs are also used to hold food. The muscular back two legs are extra large and made for jumping.

They have three body regions (the head, thorax, and abdomen) and possess a tracheal system for breathing, three pairs of legs, and two pairs of wings.

Because grasshoppers have such powerful jumping legs, people sometimes don't realize they have wings, too! Most grasshoppers are pretty strong fliers, and will make good use of their wings to escape predators. Their jumping ability just gives them a boost into the air.

The grasshopper body is divided into 3 basic components: the head, which bears the sen- sory structures such as eyes, antennae, and mouthparts; the thorax, which bears the structures associated with movement, namely the legs and wings; and the abdomen, which bears the digestive and reproductive structures.
