Anionic/acidogenic diets (diets having a negative charge due to higher concentration of chloride, sulfur, and phosphorus) promote a more acidic metabolic state (lower blood pH)) that is associated with a reduced incidence of milk fever.

Typical diets fed to dry dairy cows in the United States have a DCAD (using the formula (Na + K)−(Cl + S)) of about +50 to +250 meq kg−1 of diet dry matter. Any reduction in DCAD of this diet will lessen the metabolic alkalosis it causes and reduce the risk of milk fever.

How do DCAD diets work? Essentially, a negative DCAD of -8 to -12 meq/100g metabolizes the calcium transfer from bone to the bloodstream, increasing blood calcium and reducing the likelihood of milk fever.

DCAD is calculated by subtracting the milliequiva- lents of positively charged cations, sodium and potas- sium, from the negatively charged anions, sulfur and chlorine. If more milliequivalents of cations are avail- able, then the charge is positive and if more anions are present, then the charge is negative.

Cations in the diet promote a more alkaline (higher blood pH) metabolic state which has been associated with an increased incidence of milk fever. Anions have a negative charge such as chloride (Cl), sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P).

Feeding a negative DCAD diet tends to slightly decrease blood pH, which has been shown to improve the responsiveness of the target tissues to PTH, increasing calcium release from bone and vitamin D activation in the kidney. This is another reason why negative-DCAD diets work to support calcium status around calving.
