What does it mean to leave no trace? Leave No Trace means exactly what you might think: enjoy your outdoor adventures to the fullest, and leave no sing that you were ever there. No-trace or “minimum impact” camping is Scouting's outdoor philosophy.

Through the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace, we can take responsibility for our own impacts. We can provide leadership to those around us to reduce their impacts by making good choices. Together, we can preserve and conserve our rich environmental heritage.

Cub Scout #1: Be clean in my outdoor manners. Cub Scout #2: Be careful with fire. Cub Scout #3: Be considerate in the outdoors. Cub Scout #4: Be conservation-minded.

There are 12 principles a Boy Scout lives by which is actually considered the Scout Law. "A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent." All leaders must have and live by a set of values.

Preserve the past: examine, photograph, but do not touch cultural or historic structures and artifacts. Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them. Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species. Do not build structures, furniture, or dig trenches.

The Outdoor Code asks us to do our best by showing respect for the outdoors by being clean, careful with fire, considerate, and conservation-minded. The Leave No Trace Principle gives us seven guidelines to help us preserve nature: Know Before You Go. (Follow any rules of where you are heading)

Leave No Trace is an awareness and an attitude rather than a set of rules. It applies in your backyard or local park as much as in the backcountry. We should all practice Leave No Trace in our thinking and actions–wherever we go.

Respect Wildlife Observe wildlife from afar to avoid disturbing them. Give animals a wide berth, especially during breeding, nesting, and birthing seasons. Store food securely and keep garbage and food scraps away from animals so they will not acquire bad habits. Never feed wildlife.
