Paired reading is a research-based fluency strategy used with readers who lack fluency. In this strategy, students read aloud to each other. When using partners, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers, or children who read at the same level can be paired to reread a story they have already read.

Some teachers worry that more students will be turned off to reading by this change, but more and more teachers are discovering that when fiction and nonfiction are paired, they can significantly improve literacy development.

Paired reading helps students work together, encourages cooperation and supports peer-assisted learning. It allows students to take turns reading and provide each other with feedback as a way to monitor comprehension.

As students read each text, consider having them take notes on the significant details that relate to the pairing questions. Then, have them respond to a pairing prompt or question in writing. This will give students a great start on the brainstorming for an extended essay or even a class discussion.

We follow this process when tackling paired passages: Read the first passage, discuss it, and answer questions. Read the second passage, discuss it, and answer questions. Analyze the connection or similarities and differences between the two passages, re-reading them if needed.

Paired text is a cur- ricular resource to help readers make connections across texts. By using paired text, readers “develop both an expectation for connections and strategies and for making the search for connections more productive and wide ranging” (Short & Harste, with Burke, 1996, p. 537).

Paired passages can be used to focus on comparing and contrasting. They are also perfect for students to practice “analyzing how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take,” as called for by Common Core.

A paired text is two texts that are conceptually related in some way, for example, topic, theme, or genre (Harste & Short, with Burke, 1988).
