Although Mac had originally put the men in a perilous state, his help on the rafts had been immeasurable. Louis and Phil held an impromptu service over Mac's body before sliding him into the water. The next day, without realizing it, Louis and Phil surpassed the record for survival while being lost at sea.

Much to Louie's surprise, he finds his old USC college buddy Jimmie Sasaki at Ofuna, working as an interrogator for the Japanese navy.

When its crew spots the Americans, the plane opens fire, sending Louie skittering into the ocean where sharks await. He fights off the sharks long enough to get back into the raft, only to come under fire from the Japanese again. The three men survive, but one of the rafts is punctured by bullet holes.

The three survivors were Zamperini, pilot Russell Allen Phillips and Francis McNamara; with little food and no water, they subsisted on rainwater, small fish eaten raw, and birds that landed on their raft.

Among the few things that were on the Green Hornet's raft were military-issued chocolate bars, a few half-pints of water, a flare gun, sea dye, fishhooks, and a fishing line.

Unbroken: Path to Redemption is a 2018 American Christian drama film directed by Harold Cronk, and acts as a sequel to the 2014 film Unbroken, although Legendary Pictures was not involved and none of the original cast or crew returns except the producer Matthew Baer, and actors Vincenzo Amato and Maddalena Ischiale.

Afterward, Louie devises a scheme for catching and killing sharks, then eating their livers for nourishment. Mac, however, continues to falter. After more than a month in the rafts, Mac dies and is buried at sea.
