gas laws, laws that relate the pressure, volume, and temperature of a gas. Boyle's law—named for Robert Boyle—states that, at constant temperature, the pressure P of a gas varies inversely with its volume V, or PV = k, where k is a constant. Charles's law—named for J. -A.

Gases expand spontaneously to fill containers in which they are held, equaling their volume. Consequently, they are highly compressible. The characteristic properties of gases arise because the individual molecules are relatively far apart, hence, acting largely as though they were alone.

Gas is one of four natural states of matter, along with liquid, solid and plasma. A gas has no fixed shape or volume. The atoms or molecules that make up the gas fill the container that holds them. The gas expands until it is uniformly distributed throughout the container, even in the presence of gravity.

Combined gas law: P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2 Use the gas laws for pressure, volume and temperature calculations.

Avogadro's law states that "equal volumes of all gases, at the same temperature and pressure, have the same number of molecules." For a given mass of an ideal gas, the volume and amount (moles) of the gas are directly proportional if the temperature and pressure are constant.

The fundamental gas laws are the following: Boyle's Law, Charles' Law, and Avogadro's Law. We will also discuss the Gay-‐Lussac law When we combine these Laws, we get the Combined Gas Law and the Ideal Gas Law.

Section 13.1 The Gas Laws (cont.) For a fixed amount of gas, a change in one variable—pressure, temperature, or volume—affects the other two. Boyle's law states that the volume of a fixed amount of gas held at a constant temperature varies inversely with the pressure.
