While earthquake insurance can be great to have if your home is seriously damaged and the damage exceeds your deductible, the high premiums and deductibles that come with earthquake coverage can make the balance between what you pay and what you get uneven.

Generally, earthquake insurance deductibles are between 10% and 25% of the dwelling coverage policy limit. For example, if you have $250,000 of dwelling coverage and a 10% deductible, you would have to pay $25,000 for repairs before the insurance would start paying.

Covers earthquake damage to your home and structures attached to it, like your garage. Your home is covered up to the Dwelling's insured value on your homeowners insurance policy. For example, if your home insurance value is $200,000, your earthquake insurance coverage will be the same amount.

Traditional earthquake insurance covers damage caused by an earthquake by insuring “pure loss.” That means they will assess the value of the items lost and reimburse you for that specific amount – this amount will be different for different people.

How Does CEA Compare with Other Earthquake Insurance Providers? While CEA insurers offer the bulk of residential earthquake policies in California, other insurers also sell coverage. And CEA coverage may be different from other earthquake insurance options.

Covers earthquake-damage repairs that are needed to protect your personal property from further damage (examples: repair broken windows or remove broken glass). If your rental is damaged by an earthquake, Emergency Repairs will cover up to $1,000 to make your home safe. There is no deductible for Emergency Repairs.

The limit on your earthquake insurance is the same as the limit on your homeowners insurance (dwelling coverage). CEA offers deductibles of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. You do not have to pay your CEA deductible up front to receive a claim check, it is simply the amount deducted from your total covered losses.
