Air Conditioner Components. An air conditioner is made up of many components, but the major parts doing the heavy lifting of moving the air indoors and outdoors are the evaporator, condenser, expansion valve, and compressor. Keep in mind they're each either located outside (the hot side) or inside (the cool side).

Air conditioning, often abbreviated as A/C or AC, is the process of removing heat from an enclosed space to achieve a more comfortable interior environment (sometimes referred to as 'comfort cooling') and in some cases also strictly controlling the humidity of internal air.

There are three primary functions to a room Air Conditioner. First is to cool a specific area, such as a room, not an entire home. The second is to dehumidify, to remove moisture out of the air, so you're not sitting in a cold, clammy environment. The third function is to filter the air within the home.

For an air conditioning system to operate with economy, the refrigerant must be used repeatedly. For this reason, all air conditioners use the same cycle of compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation in a closed circuit.

The warm air from inside your home is drawn in and passed through an expansion valve which regulates the flow. It is then blown over the cold evaporator coil, which absorbs the heat from the air. As the refrigerant inside the coils absorbs the heat, it changes back into a gas and moves towards the compressor.

"As the air moves across the evaporator coil, the coil absorbs heat and also wrings out moisture," said Hourahan. "The air now has a cooler temperature and is drier, so when it comes out of the registers [vents], it mixes with room air and makes the room more comfortable."

Step 1: Heat is absorbed by the evaporator coil. The warm air inside your house is drawn in through a vent and blows over the cold evaporator coil. ... Step 2: Compressor raises the refrigerant temperature. ... Step 3: Heat is transferred outside. ... Step 4: Refrigerant gets cold; process repeats.
