An abjad represents consonants with graphical symbols, like an alphabet. But abjads represent vowels either not at all or with secondary markings, something like accents. This makes perfect sense for languages whose words are built on consonantal roots with the letters in a particular order.

Arabic—that is, its writing system rather than the language itself—is not an abugida but an abjad; that is, its alphabet consists entirely of consonants which may be augmented by markings that indicate the vowel sounds that are used in speech, but are not necessary for writing.

Arabic uses a system called Abjad, where each letter stands for a consonant (i.e., there are no vowel letters). While Arabic doesn't officially have vowel letters, it does have ways of making long and short vowel sounds.

The Arabic alphabet is considered an abjad, meaning it only uses consonants, but it is now considered an "impure abjad". As with other impure abjads, such as the Hebrew alphabet, scribes later devised means of indicating vowel sounds by separate vowel diacritics.

Well-known examples of abjads are the Arabic alphabet and the Hebrew alphabet.

In the Abjad system, the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, ʾalif, is used to represent 1; the second letter, bāʾ, 2, up to 9. Letters then represent the first nine intervals of 10s and those of the 100s: yāʾ for 10, kāf for 20, qāf for 100, ending with 1000.

"Abjad" is the name given to the arrangement of the Arabic alphabet ing to the occurrence of its 28 letters in a series of eight symbolic "words" (shown above), the first of which is "abjad" itself. (People used to memorize these "words," horribly clunky as they are, in order to have a quick key to the system.)
