These surgeries focus light correctly on the retina so you can see more clearly. The most common refractive surgery is LASIK. Other common surgeries include PRK and SMILE. There are several other options as well.

Types of surgery to correct refractive errors include: LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) Radial keratotomy (RK) Astigmatic keratotomy (AK) Automated lamellar keratoplasty (ALK) Laser thermal keratoplasty (LTK) Conductive keratoplasty (CK) Intracorneal ring (Intacs)

Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a laser-assisted surgical procedure for the correction of visual refractive errors. This activity will review the indications, laser, equipment, contraindications, complications, and long-term prognosis of patients who undergo LASIK.

In addition to corneal refractive procedures (LASIK, PRK and LASEK), intraocular refractive procedures (phakic intraocular lenses, refractive lens exchange and clear lens extraction) are also performed on children.

Currently, PRK is being used to treat between 1.0 and 12.0 diopters of myopia (with up to 4.0 diopters of astigmatism) and 1.0 to 6.0 diopters of hyperopia (with up to 4.0 diopters of astigmatism).

What types of surgery can fix refractive errors? The most common type of refractive surgery is called LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis). Most types of refractive surgery, including LASIK, use lasers to change the shape of the cornea. Some use other tools, like implants.

The doctor makes a flap in the outer layer of the cornea to get to the tissue underneath. They then use a laser to reshape the tissue underneath your cornea so it can focus light properly. The flap is what makes LASIK different from other procedures.

Refractive cataract surgery starts in the same manner as standard cataract surgery. Your natural eye lens is removed. However, it is replaced with an advanced multi-focal lens, which also corrects your vision. Refractive cataract surgery can correct near- and farsightedness as well as astigmatism.
