Tuberous Begonia Tuberous Begonias have large, bright flowers; one popular series is called Non-Stop due to the consistent blooming. Boliviensis begonias are also tuberous and have very different look, with long narrow leaves and long blooms. These begonias do best in containers where it is easier to control watering.

Fibrous-rooted begonias will look stringy; rhizomatous will have creeping surface stems and roots; and tuberous begonias have a round, flattened brown tuber that looks, well, a lot like a cow pie! Once you know what type you have, either repot them or store the tubers.

How many different begonia varieties are there? There are around 2,000 species in the Begonia genus. Most of the species come from tropical climates and require warm temperatures to grow.

Too Much Sunlight Begonias are shade-loving perennial plants, too much sun and they will burn up and not bloom. If the leaves are crispy and the plant is stunted, take a look at the amount of sun they are getting. Shade plants like 4-6 hours of direct sun. I find early morning sun or late afternoon sun is best.

Spacing: Begonia tubers should be spaced about 1 foot apart in the garden, but can be planted closer together in hanging baskets and window boxes. For one begonia plant, a 6 inch pot is the smallest recommended size.
