The montante was a large two handed sword that became popular in 17th century Spain and Portugal. It was related to other similar swords from the period, including the Italian Spadone, German Zweihander, and Scottish Claymore, among others.

The Weapon The term montante was born in the XVIth century, when this type of sword started to come into use. References to it can be found in fencing manuals of the XVIIth century, not only as a sword actually taught in the schools, but also as the “badge sword” for Spanish fencing masters.

Historically, the sword developed in the Bronze Age, evolving from the dagger; the earliest specimens date to about 1600 BC. The later Iron Age sword remained fairly short and without a crossguard.

The rules of the montante follow Two forehand blows followed by a thrust, and then exit (neither more nor less). Three flying forehand blows, and then return with another three backhand blows. A forehand blow forward and a backhand blow forward, and then return (neither more nor less).

A vara castellana equals 83,59 centimetres, which means the ideal montante height would be 167.18cm –nearly 170cm, or about 5.5 feet. Pacheco also instructs that the proportions between blade and hilt should be six to two, which means the ideal montante should have 125.38cm of blade and 41.80cm of hilt.

The "Montante" is a two-handed sword popular in the XVIth Century. This long-blade sword is similar to the french "Espadon" and the italian "Spadone" and was used on the battlefield as for duels.
