RTI consists of the following components: Universal screening: Screening assessment administered to all students in the class. Tier 1: Class- or school-wide interventions. Tier 2: Targeted interventions. Tier 3: Intensive, individualized interventions.

The National Center on RTI says the four essential components of a research-based framework for RTI are: universal screening, continuing progress monitoring, multi-level prevention system, and data-based decision making.

Here's a look at the three tiers of RTI. Tier 1: The whole class. Tier 2: Small group interventions. Tier 3: Intensive interventions.

Intensive individualized instruction and interventions are used with children who have very persistent and severe challenging behavior and do not respond to the typical preventive practices, child guidance procedures, or social emotional teaching strategies that would normally work with most children.

Intensive Intervention (Tier 3) “Evidence-based” at Tier 3 means that the interventionist is following the data-based individualization (DBI) process with fidelity, making iterative adaptations as needed to an intervention platform, using his or her clinical judgment and expertise based on analysis of student data.

And so that means a willingness to make modifications, a willingness to make adaptations, and a willingness to reflect on evidence-based decision making so that the kind of intensive intervention you provide is really specific to that student.

Chris Lemons: Intensive interventions are interventions that require professionals to make decisions using data to improve instruction for individual students that have not responded to standard protocol at Tier 1 and Tier 2. So, in a sense, you could think of intensive interventions as a process instead of a product.
