The New Haven–Springfield Line was built by the Hartford and New Haven Railroad (H&NH) and began operations in 1844, forming the first all-rail route between Boston and New Haven, with steamship service on Long Island Sound completing service to New York.

The New Haven Railroad was formed in 1872 when the New York & New Haven and Hartford & New Haven railroads were merged together to form the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company. The New Haven's early management focused on expanding the company through an aggressive policy of mergers and acquisitions.

New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company, American railroad operating in southern New England and New York. It was absorbed by the Penn Central Transportation Company in 1969. In 1849 the Naugatuck Railroad opened its lirie between Naugatuck and Winsted, running through Waterbury.

New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad The result was the creation of a new, modern image unlike virtually anything else in U.S. railroads. This included a new logo: a bold, stacked NH, with a red, black, and white color scheme that alternated ing to season.

Around the turn of the century, the New Haven Railroad came under the control of J. P. Morgan, the notorious financier. Morgan set out to build a complete New England transportation monopoly using the New Haven Railroad as his cash cow and base of operations.
