The globe is split into an imaginary 360 sections from both top to bottom (north to south) and 180 sections from side to side (west to east). The sections running from top to bottom on a globe are called longitude, and the sections running from side to side on a globe are called latitude.

Latitude and longitude can be determined using the sun and stars. Latitude refers to the angular distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees. Latitude can be found using the sun or Polaris (the North Star). The angle of the sun below the vertical equals the latitudinal position.

Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BCE first proposed a system of latitude and longitude for a map of the world.

Hipparchus, a Greek astronomer (190–120 BC), was the first to specify location using latitude and longitude as co-ordinates.

The concept of longitude was first developed by ancient Greek astronomers. Hipparchus (2nd century BCE) used a coordinate system that assumed a spherical Earth, and divided it into 360° as we still do today. His prime meridian passed through Alexandria.

A system of lines is used to find the location of any place on the surface of the Earth. Commonly called a grid system, it is made up of two sets of lines that cross each other. One set—lines of latitude—runs in an east-west direction. The other set—lines of longitude—runs in a north-south direction.

The grid consists of two sets of horizontal and vertical lines, which are called parallels of latitudes and the meridians of longitudes. Horizontal lines are drawn parallel to each other in east-west direction. The line drawn midway between the North Pole and the South Pole is called the equator.

A Greek astronomer, Hipparchus (190–120 BC), first used longitude and latitude as coordinates to identify position. His proposal was a zero meridian that passed through the Rhodes.
