A single replacement reaction occurs when one element replaces another element in one compound. This type of reaction is represented by: A + BC → B + AC. A double replacement reaction occurs when two ionic compounds exchange ions, producing two new ionic compounds.

More reactive elements tend to gain or lose electrons. Less reactive elements tend to share electrons. So, we can generally think of reactivity in terms of electronegativity and/or electron affinity. Most often, we compare reactivity for single-replacement and double-replacement reactions.

A typical characteristic of a single-replacement reaction is that there is one element as a reactant and another element as a product. There are two equivalent ways of considering a double-replacement equation: either the cations are swapped, or the anions are swapped.

Single-replacement reactions only occur when the element that is doing the replacing is more reactive than the element that is being replaced. Therefore, it is useful to have a list of elements in order of their relative reactivities. The activity series is a list of elements in decreasing order of reactivity.

A higher ranked element in the activity series is more reactive in a single replacement reaction. We predict a single replacement reaction will occur when a less reactive element can be replaced by a more reactive element in a compound.

Sometimes, an element replaces another element that is a part of a compound. This type of reaction is called a single- displacement reaction.
