Located along the San Saba River, the mission was intended to convert members of the Lipan Apache tribe. Although no Apache ever resided at the mission, its existence convinced the Comanche that the Spanish had allied with the Comanche's mortal enemy.

Early permanent settlers included the Harkey family, who settled at Wallace and Richland creeks in the fall of 1854, and the David Matsler family, who moved from Burnet County and settled on Cherokee Creek that same year. San Saba County was organized in 1856 from Bexar County and was named for the San Saba River.

The Mission San Sabá was established in 1757 for the Lipan Apache. The Lipan Apache, however, had enemies among the Comanche and other northern Texas Indian groups, who, after learning that their enemies would be at the mission, attacked and burned the mission. San Sabá was abandoned after the attack.

Police – Chief John Bauer began his law enforcement career in 2006 with the Plano Police Department.

San Saba's residents and visitors enjoy our award-winning eighteen hole municipal golf course and rv park, two suspension bridges, national registry trees, historic building and churches, and the oldest fully functional jail in the nation, and… PECANS!

On this day in 1758, some 2,000 Comanches and allied North Texas Indians descended on Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá, on the San Saba River near the present site of Menard.

Legend has it that the Spanish built a fort in the area now known as San Saba in the late 1700's, when the Spanish had conquered all of Mexico and had started to spread into what is now South Texas.

Most numerous of early day Indians known to have inhabited Central West Texas were the Comanches, the Lipans, Cherokees, Wacos, Caddoes, and Kickapoos. Indications were that they used the streams of San Saba County as favorite camping grounds prior to and with the coming of the white man in this region.
