The PLAR process: Identifies how your practical experience matches learning outcomes in your post-secondary program. Assesses how closely your skills and knowledge match those learning outcomes. Recognizes how your experience meets or exceeds learning outcomes through post-secondary credit.

What is PLAR? Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process used by TESL Canada to assess and evaluate the skills and knowledge of an ESL teacher applying for TESL Canada certification, but who has not received training through a TESL Canada recognized program.

Prior learning assessment & recognition (PLAR) is a process that gives you the opportunity to obtain academic credit for one or more courses in a certificate, diploma or degree. You will need to demonstrate that you have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge through life experiences.

How do I become certified? To become TESL Canada certified, you must have a minimum of 100 hours' TESL/TEFL training, a 20-hour practicum teaching adults, and a Bachelor's degree in any discipline. Please refer to our certification FAQs to learn more.
