The relative velocity is defined as the velocity of an object with respect to another observer. It is the time rate of change of relative position of one object with respect to another object.

The absolute velocity formulation is preferred in applications where the flow in most of the domain is not rotating (e.g., a fan in a large room). The relative velocity formulation is appropriate when most of the fluid in the domain is rotating, as in the case of a large impeller in a mixing tank.

What is relative velocity formula? The formula to calculate the relative velocity of an object with respect to another is Vab= Vb-Va, where Vab is the relative velocity of object A with respect to object B and Vb and Va are the velocities of the objects with respect to a third observer.

VAB = VA - VB. When both objects are moving in same direction , then the relative velocity of object B with respect to the object A. VBA = VB - VA.

The relative velocity is defined as the velocity of an object with respect to another observer. It is the time rate of change of relative position of one object with respect to another object.

The velocity of an object is the rate of change of its position with respect to a frames of reference and is a function of time. Velocity is equivalent to a specification of its speed and direction of motion (e.g. 60 km/hr to the north).

The equation for relative velocity is as follows: VAB = VA – VB Where: VAB = is the velocity of body A as observed by body B VA = velocity of body A VB = velocity of body B (alternatively, this can be switched around to find VBA, which is the velocity of body B relative to body A.

When two bodies are moving in opposite directions along a straight path then the relative velocity of each body is greater than the absolute velocity of either body. let the velocity of A and B moving in opposite directions be Va and Vb respectively. Va=+V , Vb=-V.
