The 555 timer IC is an integrated circuit (chip) used in a variety of timer, delay, pulse generation, and oscillator applications. Derivatives provide two (556) or four (558) timing circuits in one package. The design was first marketed in 1972 by Signetics and used bipolar junction transistors.

555 Timer Circuits The simplest 555 oscillator takes output pin 3 to capacitor C1 via resistor R1. The amount of time when the output is HIGH is called the MARK and the time when the output is LOW is called the SPACE. This ratio can be altered by adding a diode and resistor as shown in the following diagrams.

The advantages of the 555 timer are as follows: The three modes of 555 timer IC has various applications in different fields. It can produce accurate timing pulses. It can operate as a simple timer and can also produce time-delays. It is also known as a highly stable controller. It works in wide voltages ranges.

The bipolar 555 timer is essentially obsolete. However, the CMOS equivalent is still widely used in modern circuits and products. For example, one of my favorite circuits uses a single TLC555 timer, two resistors, and two capacitors to generate a close approximation of a fixed-frequency sine wave.

The 555 timer is a chip that can be used to create pulses of various durations, to output a continuous pulse waveform of adjustable pulse width and frequency, and to toggle between high and low states in response to inputs.

555 timer IC (Figure 2) is thus mainly seen to consist of three 5 KΩ resistors (hence the name 555) constituting a voltage divider, two voltage comparators, flip-flop and transistors for discharge. Inside the IC the 5 KΩ resistors are connected in series with the DC power supply (Vcc).
