The Geologic time scale is a record of the life forms and geological events in Earth's history. The geologic time scale was developed by scientist that study rock layers and fossils. Each time can be broken from large amounts of time to smaller amounts of time. Eons are the largest and can be broken down into Eras.

The geologic time scale divides up the history of the earth based on life-forms that have existed during specific times since the creation of the planet. These divisions are called geochronologic units (geo: rock, chronology: time).

Geological Eras Cenozoic Era: Topic. Last major division of geologic time lasting from 65 million years ago to the present. ... Mesozoic Era: Topic. [Gr.,=middle life], major division of geologic time (see Geologic Timescale, table) from 65 to 225 million years ago. ... Paleozoic Era. ... Precambrian: Topic. ... Archean Eon. ... Proterozoic Eon.

Name the 11 (or 12) periods on the Geologic Time Scale, in order from oldest to present. It was the Cambrian,Ordovician,Siliurian,Devonian,Mississippian,Pennsylvanian,Permian, Trassic,Jurassic,Creataceous,Tertiary, and Quaternary.

Earth's history is characterized by four eons; in order from oldest to youngest, these are the Hadeon, Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic.

The geologic time scale provides geologists across the world with a shared reference of time. You might say that the geologic time scale is to geoscientists what the periodic table of elements is to chemists. The geologic time scale is divided into (from longest to shortest): eons, eras, periods, epochs and ages.

The four main ERAS are, from oldest to youngest: PreCambrian, Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Periods are a finer subdivision in the geological time scale.

As of April 2022 there are currently 22 defined periods/systems. As an exception two subperiods/subsystems are used for the Carboniferous Period/System. An epoch is the second smallest geochronologic unit, between a period and an age.
