The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was created in 1896 by Charles Dow and originally consisted of 12 companies, each considered a giant in its sector. The DJIA was first introduced in The Wall Street Journal as the first index of stock market activity.

The WSJ is a division of Dow Jones, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. The paper's primary focus is business and economy but also covers other areas of news.

Bloomberg Ticker : DJIEW. The Dow Jones Industrial Average® Equal Weight is the equal-weight version of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which seeks to measure the performance of 30 U.S. blue-chip companies.

The company also manages the oldest index in use, the Dow Jones Transportation Index, created in 1882 by Charles Dow, the founder of The Wall Street Journal. S&P Global (formerly McGraw Hill Financial, Inc.), owner of Standard & Poor's, controls 73% of the joint venture, CME Group owns 24.4% through its affiliates.

Currently, Dow Jones is owned by Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corp and several other major media companies.

What Is the Meaning of Dow in the Stock Market? The Dow Jones Industrial Average, or the Dow for short, is one way of measuring the stock market's overall direction. It includes the prices of 30 of the most actively traded stocks. When the Dow goes up, it is considered bullish, and most stocks usually do well.

To calculate the DJIA, the current prices of the 30 stocks that make up the index are added and then divided by the Dow divisor, which is constantly modified.

The Dow Jones is a price-weighted index, meaning its value is derived from the price per share for each stock divided by a common divisor. The Dow was created by Charles Dow to reflect a simple way of showing the average price of stocks in the marketplace.
