The Handmaid's Tale (1985) by Margaret Atwood is a dystopian novel set in a version of the United States that has been overthrown by religious fundamentalists. In what was once most likely Massachusetts, under the militaristic regime of the Republic of Gilead, women no longer have civil rights or autonomy.

It's a made-up phrase in mock Latin-a schoolboy's joke, as it's explained in both the novel and the series. If it were a real phrase, it would roughly translate to 'don't let the bastards grind you down.

While there is plenty of traditional feminist critique of male power structures in Atwood's works, and particularly in The Handmaid's Tale, this thesis argues that the power structure of Gilead (the biblically-inflected nation Atwood imagines) also critiques the feminine roles that support and enable the repression of ...

The themes of The Handmaid's Tale include power, sexuality, the place of the individual in society, feminism, the power of language, moral relativism, and gender conflict. Power is the dominant theme because the story is set in a theocratic dictatorship and the government has all the power.

Set in the oppressive theocracy of Gilead, it follows the lives of three women–Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy–whose fates become intricately entwined. The narrative unravels the secrets of Gilead's inner workings and the resistance against its regime.

The Handmaid's Tale argues that legally controlling women's reproductive freedom is morally and politically wrong. The suffering of Offred and the other Handmaids is directly caused by the Gileadean state's desire to own and control women's fertility.

Atwood's works encompass a variety of themes including gender and identity, religion and myth, the power of language, climate change, and "power politics". Many of her poems are inspired by myths and fairy tales which interested her from a very early age.

Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale is a thought provoking novel about the domination and governing of women by men. It presents a dystopia where freedom for women is restricted because of the new Christian government's extreme policies.
