The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is about two brothers, William Armstrong, nicknamed Doodle, and the narrator, who is not named but simply called Brother. The story is told from the narrator's point of view, as he is looking back on his life as a boy.

Doodle is born with a heart condition and is expected to die as an infant. ing to his doctor, he'll never be able to walk. If the doctor had his way, Doodle would live a sheltered life, cut off from experiencing the physical and sensory joys of the outdoors.

Unlike the ibis, Doodle doesn't die because he's been in a storm. He overexerts himself rowing, then overexerts himself more by running, and then gets frightened when Brother abandons him in the storm. He is in a storm, but he most likely dies as a result of his heart condition.

Brother knows that Doodle's biggest fear was of abandonment. So, the fact that he abandoned Doodle in the storm just before Doodle's death must cause him amazing amounts of guilt. The last thing Doodle saw of Brother was Brother running away from him.

Doodle is born with a heart condition and is expected to die as an infant. ing to his doctor, he'll never be able to walk. If the doctor had his way, Doodle would live a sheltered life, cut off from experiencing the physical and sensory joys of the outdoors.

The narrator, Doodle's older brother, is responsible for Doodle's death for the following reasons: never accepted Doodle from the beginning, pushed Doodle too far, and acted out of selfishness. Doodle's older brother disliked him from the day he was born.

Like the ibis, Doodle died under a red tree after pushing himself too far. Doodle bled out of his mouth, an implicit reference to the bleeding tree. Brother admits that he urged Doodle to run more out of pride and cruelty than love, so in a sense, Doodle died for Brother's sin of pride.

In the story, the event of the summer storm foreshadows Doodle's death. At the beginning of the story, a scarlet ibis is isolated from his flock in a hurricane, and ends up in the backyard of Doodle. He soon falls dead from exhaustion. At the end of the story, the storm rages again.
