About Americium in Ionization Smoke Detectors Alpha particles from the americium source ionize air molecules. This makes some particles positively charged and some negatively charged. Two charged plates inside of the ionization smoke detector create a flow of positively and negatively charged ions.

Ionization smoke detectors contain a small amount of radioactive material called Americium-241. Ionization detectors should be returned to the manufacturer for proper disposal. Photoelectric smoke detectors do not contain any radioactive material and may be disposed of in the trash.

For many years NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, has required as a minimum that smoke alarms be installed inside every sleep room (even for existing homes) in addition to requiring them outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. (Additional smoke alarms are required for larger homes.)

There are three types of smoke alarms, ionization, photoelectric and a combination of the two which is commonly called a “dual” detector. Look for the UL stamp on any smoke alarm. Research has shown: Ionization smoke alarms detect flaming fires marginally earlier than photo-electric smoke alarms.

Most smoke detectors use americium-241 as their source. Some early models used radium-226, and commercial smoke detectors and some residential units used nickel-63. The types of radiation from these sources cannot make anything else radioactive.

Consumers should be aware that ionization smoke detectors contain a small amount of the man-made radioactive material Americium-241. When smoke enters the ionization chamber of this type of smoke alarm, it disrupts the flow of particles coming from the radioactive material, thus triggering the alarm.

Generally, there are two types of home smoke alarms: photoelectric and ionization.
