The Yazoo lands were the central and western regions of the U.S. state of Georgia, when its western border stretched back to the Mississippi. The Yazoo lands were named for the Yazoo nation, that lived on the lower course of the Yazoo, in what is now Mississippi.

Standing as the famous Gateway to the Delta, Yazoo City occupies a fabled spot in Mississippi's culture and history. Tourists make the drive to Yazoo City a part of their trips through the state because of this rich history. Our famous native children include Gov.

Georgia legislatures passed and the governor George Mathews signed the Yazoo Act in 1795. This act allowed Georgia to sell large areas of its western lands to four private companies.

Frustrated claimants sued for redress. In the case of Fletcher v. Peck (1810) , Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the Rescinding Act had been an unconstitutional violation of the right of contract.

In 1795 Georgia governor Georgia Mathews signed the Yazoo Act, which transferred 35 million acres of the state's western territory to four separate companies for a sum of $500,000.

The biggest result of the Yazoo Land Fraud was the Supreme Court case Fletcher v. Peck. The court ruled in 1810 that contracts could not be retroactively negated, and marked the first time the Supreme Court overturned a state law.
