Saul was chosen by God himself to be the first king of Israel. Saul defeated many of the enemies of his country, including the Ammonites, Philistines, Moabites, and Amalekites. He united the scattered tribes, giving them greater strength.

Ascension to the Throne Saul was anointed as king by Samuel during a one on one meeting, after Samuel selected him. Saul was chosen by the Israelite tribes/people during a great time of need. ... He rescued the town of Jabesh-Gilead from Ammonites and was then chosen by the people to rule.

Military victories After relieving the siege of Jabesh-Gilead, Saul conducts military campaigns against the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Aram Rehob and the kings of Zobah, the Philistines, and the Amalekites. A biblical summary states that "wherever he turned, he was victorious".

In the last chapter of 1 Samuel we read that Saul tried to get his armourbearer to kill him. When the man wouldn't, Saul fell upon his own sword and died. In 2 Samuel 1 the story is told of a man who thought he could gain David's favor by claiming to be the one who killed Saul.

He thought he had kept the law by offering the best of the Amalekites' animals as sacrifice. Samuel replied: "Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice. . . ." (1 Sam.

Remind students that Saul had seriously offended God by disobeying His commandments. Because of his sins, Saul had lost the companionship of the Holy Ghost and felt troubled by an evil influence that was not of God.

His pride, jealousy, and fear displaced the faith he once had in his heart for God. Saul became spiritually hardhearted and blind to God and to his own sinful acts. Saul led the nation as king for about 42 years, but Saul did not fully obey the Lord, and thereby sinned against God.

Saul was similar to the charismatic judges who preceded him in the role of governing. His chief contribution, however, was to defend Israel against its many enemies, especially the Philistines.

In 1 Samuel 18:17–27 we learn that Saul devised a plan to have David killed. He offered one of his daughters for David to marry if David would kill one hundred Philistines. Saul hoped that David would be killed in battle, but David was victorious and married Saul's daughter Michal.
