Good communication between you and your child is important for developing a positive relationship and will make it easier for you to talk about difficult topics as they get older. One of the most challenging tasks to learn is how to respond to behavior.

Students who had authoritative father had significantly higher self-esteem than authoritarian and neglectful groups, but not significantly different from permissive father. Thus, this study shows that self-esteem is highest among students with authoritative parents and lowest among students with neglectful parents.

Children from authoritative families had higher self-esteem at all four age points as compared to children from authoritarian families. Even permissive parenting was found to result in higher self-esteem levels in comparison to authoritarian parenting.

Parents who communicate effectively with their children are more likely to have children who are willing to do what they are told. Such children know what to expect from their parents, and once children know what is expected of them, they are more likely to live up to these expectations.

Effective communication within a family can strengthen relationships in good times and repair relationships in trying times. Communication can be defined as a way to share information, ideas and emotions between people.

Furthermore, authoritative parenting style was found to have had the greatest impact on adolescent self- esteem; it enhanced the highest self-esteem levels of adolescents above other parenting styles. The study thus recommends parental skills training for parents of adolescents.

Studies suggest that parental involvement can lead to academic gains for students: higher grades and test scores, improved social skills and time on task, better attendance and participation, and decreased behavioral problems in the classroom.
