Biological macromolecules are important cellular components and perform a wide array of functions necessary for the survival and growth of living organisms. The four major classes of biological macromolecules are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Micromolecules are organic compounds such as sugars, amino acids, etc., They generally have a smaller molecular weight. They join together to form larger molecules such as macromolecules. Micromolecules have molecular weights of less than a thousand daltons.

Macromolecules are large complex molecules that occur in colloidal state in intercellular fluid. They are formed by the polymerization of low molecular weight micromolecules. Polysaccharides, proteins, and nucleic acids are common examples of macromolecules.

Macromolecules are basically polymers, long chains of molecular sub-units called monomers. Carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids are found as long polymers. Due to their polymeric nature and large size, they are known as macromolecules.

11.1 Introduction: The Four Major Macromolecules These are the carbohydrates, lipids (or fats), proteins, and nucleic acids. All of the major macromolecule classes are similar, in that, they are large polymers that are assembled from small repeating monomer subunits.

Biological macromolecules are large molecules, necessary for life, that are built from smaller organic molecules. There are four major classes of biological macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids); each is an important cell component and performs a wide array of functions.

Micromolecules are acid soluble, and their molecular weights range from 18 to 800 Da. Macromolecules are biomolecules which are characterized by their acid insoluble property. Proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids are the macromolecules found in living organisms; they are also called biomacromolecules.

Proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and lipids are the four major classes of biological macromolecules—large molecules necessary for life that are built from smaller organic molecules.
