A beneficiary is typically used for a life insurance policy, IRA, 401k or an annuity. POD, payable on death, is used to avoid probate on a bank account, checking, savings, money market or CD. You will keep those accounts in your name only but make POD, payable on death, to your kids.

Each account can have one or more beneficiaries. You can decide if you want a payable on death (POD) or in trust for (ITF) status for the beneficiaries. In addition to the name, Ally's form asks for the beneficiary's birth date and address. They don't ask for their social security number.

You can change or add beneficiaries to Ally Bank (Non-IRA) accounts any time by logging on to online banking, select Your Name (or Profile if you're on your mobile device) and choose Beneficiaries. You can also call us at 1-877-247-2559 or complete and mail the Change of Beneficiary form.

Beneficiaries of retirement plan and IRA accounts after the death of the account owner are subject to required minimum distribution (RMD) rules. A beneficiary is generally any person or entity the account owner chooses to receive the benefits of a retirement account or an IRA after they die.

To access this page, click on "Beneficiaries" under the "Account Services" menu which is on the right hand side of your "my accounts" page when you log in. Each account can have one or more beneficiaries. You can decide if you want a payable on death (POD) or in trust for (ITF) status for the beneficiaries.

For checking, savings, or Certificate of Deposit (CD) accounts, log in, choose Profile and Settings, then Beneficiaries, then Add Beneficiary. You can only add a beneficiary to one account at a time, and there are no primary or contingent designations.

The account holder needs only to notify the bank of who the beneficiary should be. The bank, on its end, will give the owner of the account a beneficiary designation form called a Totten trust to fill out. The completed form gives the bank authorization to convert the account to a POD.
