A PET-CT scan can cost $5,000 or more, ing to one U.S. medical center. That does not include the cost of added tests and procedures due to false alarms. Some insurance plans do not pay for routine (surveillance) PET scans in a healthy patient who has completed cancer treatment.

CT scans are non-invasive, while PET scans require an injection of radioactive tracers. PET scans are also more expensive than CT scans.

Do I have to pay for my scan? If you are covered by the provincial health plan and your indication meets BC Cancer's specific approved indications for PET/CT scanning, you will not be charged a fee for your procedure if done at our facility.

To be extra sure, some doctors will order imaging tests, known as PET scans. They are often combined with CT scans. These scans take pictures of your body where cancer might be growing. But you may not need the tests.

A PET scan is usually done as an outpatient procedure in the nuclear medicine department of a hospital or specialized PET scan centre. This means that you don't stay overnight. The test takes 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether a single organ or the whole body is scanned.

The PETscan Centre, located on the campus of the University of British Columbia, is owned by International PET Diagnostics Inc., a BC company led by architect Denis Tusar. It is currently open 2 days per week and charges $2500 per scan.
