The biggest threat to the Greater Sage-Grouse is habitat loss. A lot of their habitat is being turned into farmland or grazing area for cattle. Another threat is the development of the oil and gas industry, which is happening on land where males perform their courting displays.

Wyoming holds 38% of the world's population of greater sage grouse which live only in the western U.S. and parts of Canada. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2015 considered protecting the species under the Endangered Species Act but found that unnecessary.

The group is comprised of 11 local citizens, representing groups interested in sage grouse conservation. The role of the group is to develop and set in motion a local conservation plan to benefit sage grouse and, whenever feasible, other species that use sagebrush habitats.
