When you file something with the court, you must give the other party in your case (or their lawyer, if they have one) a copy of what you filed. This is called service. Every time you serve the other party, you must give the court proof that you did so. This is called proof of service, or proof of mailing.

Individuals. Process may be served on a resident or nonresident individual by, delivering a summons and a copy of the complaint to the defendant personally; or. sending a summons and a copy of the complaint by registered or certified mail, return receipt requested, and delivery restricted to the addressee.

(D) Proof of Service. Except as otherwise provided by MCR 2.104, 2.105, or 2.106, proof of service of documents required or permitted to be served must be by written acknowledgment of service, or a written statement by the individual who served the documents verified under MCR 1.109(D)(3).

PROOF OF SERVICE. A proof of service is, in almost all instances, required to be attached to documents that you are filing with the Court. This document is “proof” to the Court of the “service” you completed for the document you are filing.
