The name "Roosevelt" comes from the Dutch "Rosenvelt" meaning "rose field." The Roosevelt Family Coat of Arms is of a rosebud bearing three red roses on a mound of green set against a background of silver with a crest consisting of a visored helmet and three ostrich plumes in silver and red.

Two distantly related branches of the family from Oyster Bay and Hyde Park, New York, rose to global political prominence with the presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt (1901–1909) and his fifth cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933–1945), whose wife, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, was Theodore's niece.

Returning to the U.S., she married her fifth cousin once removed, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in 1905.

Marriage, family, and affairs Franklin then began courting his child-acquaintance and fifth cousin once removed, Eleanor Roosevelt, a niece of Theodore Roosevelt. In 1903 Franklin proposed to Eleanor, and after resistance from his mother, they were married on March 17, 1905.

Princess Martha and FDR jokingly referred to one another as Godfather and Godchild, and often shared meals, scenic drives, boating, and local entertainments together. Observers noted their common sense of humor and happy informality.
