The EMT-Basic course is typically a one semester course which is offered at various training institutions throughout Illinois such as community colleges and hospitals. Typical requirements to enroll in an EMT program include: 18 years of age or older. High school diploma or GED.

The Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Certificate includes three paramedic modules and one internship semester. You will receive 17 hours of college credit and a certificate from the Illinois Department of Public Health to practice in the state of Illinois as a licensed paramedic.

This includes the licensing of EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, Advanced EMT, Paramedic, Lead Instructor, Emergency Medical Dispatcher, First Responder, Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse, and Emergency Communications Registered Nurse.

EMT services operate as a part of EMS. They provide a very specific service within the realm of EMS. EMS services encompass most first responder roles, including fire, EMT and police services. EMT professionals possess a very narrow professional scope compared to the much wider scope of EMS professionals.

An individual applying by reciprocity will be issued a license that has an expiration date coinciding with the qualifying license or certification. EMTs do at least 60 hours of continuing education during each four-year renewal period. Emergency Medical Technicians with AEMT or EMT-I licensing do at least 80 hours.

The ECRN must provide documentation of continuing education hours (minimum 32 hours required) for review 45 days prior to request for recertification. Upon receipt of this documentation, the EMS department will complete and IDPH transaction card (Form No. IL 482-0837).
