State of the Ocean (SOTO), developed by NASA's Pysical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO. DAAC), is an interactive web-based tool that generates informative maps, animations, and plots that communicate and prove the discovery and analysis of the state of the oceans.

So, between climate changes and human impacts, what does the future hold for the ocean? The mean ocean temperature is increasing. A warmer ocean will lead to a much more stratified ocean, meaning that there will be more still layers of water with less mixing.

Currently, less than ten percent of the global ocean is mapped using modern sonar technology. For the ocean and coastal waters of the United States, only about 35 percent has been mapped with modern methods.

Our rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe, are all ultimately provided and regulated by the sea. Over 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihood.

Why does NASA study the ocean? Part of NASA's mission is to develop an understanding of the total Earth system and the effects of natural and human-induced changes on the global environment. Our oceans play a major role in influencing changes in the world's climate and weather.

The ocean covers 71 percent of the Earth's surface, and 50-80 percent of all life is found under its surface.

The State of the Ocean Report compiles the most up-to-date knowledge on the state of the world's oceans, from pollution to biodiversity, to assist key policy-makers in making informed decisions on ocean protection and sustainable planning.

Deep Space and the Deep Ocean are antithetically linked—they are the bookends of a continuum of extreme environments and pressures that, without technology, humans cannot access.
