A Backer is an investor that supplies a bankroll to a poker player in return for some percentage of the player's profits. Getting backed (or “staked”) allows players to play at higher stakes than they would on their own bankroll. If the player loses money, the backer is the one who primarily eats the loss.

If you do your homework and research as a backer (just like you would when investing in the stock market or crypto for example), then there is no question that becoming a poker backer can be a highly profitable thing to do. Make no mistake about it. There is big, big money to be made in the poker staking business.

Poker staking deals involve two sides – the investor (aka the “backer”) and the player (aka the “horse”). The backer provides the player with a bankroll, and the player goes to work playing either cash games or tournaments. All profits earned by the player are split between the investor and the horse.

The player and the backer each take 50% of any prize money won. However, because the backer is taking the risk, they also want the stake back. Some deals require the stake to be paid first.

At least half of WSOP contestants were staked in 2014and currently 75% to 80% of major poker tournament contestants receive financial backing, said Scott Hansbury, chief operation officer of YouStake, a site that matches players with financial backers.

Professional Poker Players Often Stake Each Other Professional poker players hedge their bets by investing in each other or what is otherwise commonly known as staking a player. Getting staked or staking a player is to financially back a player's entrance fee into tournaments, typically by former and current players.

The term markup refers to the percentage that a stakee adds to his staking rate. For example, the stakee offers a 50% share of a tournament package at a rate of 1.2:1. He therefore gets 20% more, but only pays out 1:1. The markup can either be paid upfront or deducted in the case of a win.

Poker backing generally is the same as staking, except the profit share is different. A standard backing deal usually involves the backer paying 100% of all buy-ins for 50% of the profit. This is more often seen with cash players, but there are plenty of tournament players who have backers as well.
