There are six syllable types that make this possible: closed, open, silent e, vowel pair, r-controlled, and final stable syllable.

Rule 1: If there are 2 consonant letters between 2 separated vowels, divide between them. Rule 2: If there is only 1 consonant letter between 2 separated vowels, FOR NOW…the consonant letter goes with the first syllable to 'close in' the vowel so it retains its 'short' sound.

The six common syllable types are open, closed, CVCe, vowel team, r-controlled, and consonant le. After you've talked about how to clap or tap them out, tell your students that there are different kinds of syllables. Then, teach one syllable at a time.

The acronym CLOVER helps students to remember the 6 types. Closed. Consonant Le. Open. Vowel Pair. Magic E. Bossy R.

Six written syllable-spelling conventions are used in English spelling. These were regularized by Noah Webster to justify his 1806 dictionary's division of syllables. The conventions are useful to teach because they help students remember when to double letters in spelling and how to pronounce the vowels in new words.

The 6 syllable rules include: Open Syllables, Closed Syllables, Magic e, Vowel Teams, Vowel Controlled r, and Cononant le. Lesson Plans and activities are available for all six Syllable Rules. For additional phonics rules, please see phonics instruction.

Cheatum and Lund (2004) proposed a specific instructional sequence for syllable types – closed, VCE, open, r-controlled, c-le syllables, and finally vowel teams. Further they suggested the order of vowels being taught in conjunction with the syllable types – a, i, o, u, e, y.
