NGB Form 22 will confirm your character of service at the time of your discharge, while the NGB Form 23 will verify your total time as “active duty.” In order to approve your application for this exemption, we must have both NGB Form 22 and Form 23.

The National Guard discharge document is known as NGB-22 and you won't get credit for serving in the Guard without it. For all intents and purposes, it is exactly like the DD214-the NGB-22 shows the nature of your discharge, time served and other critical information a recruiter would need to process your enlistment.

Your total enlistment period will be eight years, but you can serve as little as three or six years, and spend the remainder in IRR (Individual Ready Reserve).

Soldiers or Veterans may request their DD Form 214 for continuous periods of 90 days or more of Full Time National Guard Duty (FTNGD). Your request must contain certain basic information for us to locate/generate your separation document.

NGB Form 22 is the National Guard Report of Separation and Record of Service. It's one of the forms that members of the Guard can submit as proof of service and evidence that they've served long enough to qualify for a VA loan for their home. Members of the National Guard are not required to complete NGB Form 22.

While DD Form 214 is designated for active duty service, NGB Form 22 is meant for those who served in the Army National Guard. The NGB Form 22 is the National Guard equivalent of the DD Form 214 and is proof of service for California Army National Guard service members.

All prior service members and veterans can request copies of their military service records from the National Archives veteran service records office. For any adjustments to your record, you will also have to contact your state office and request adjustment to your record.
