The order is dedicated to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Membership is restricted to adult male Catholics. As of 2020, there were 2 million knights. Each member belongs to one of more than 16,000 local "councils" around the world.

The Fourth Degree is the highest and most prestigious within the Knights of Columbus. Sir Knights are dedicated to serving their Church, Country, and our Order; standing on the shoulders of those before us, Sir Knights stand in the Breach to serve, protect and defend our country.

Historically, Knights of Columbus are initiated through four “degrees,” each representing one of the organization's four principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.

The Knights of Columbus have councils in many countries, including Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea.

Members who wish to live out patriotism together can join “the Fourth Degree.” Members of this degree have the special honor of holding the title “Sir Knight,” participating in color and honor guards and organizing programs that promote Catholic citizenship.

The Fourth Degree is the highest degree of the order. Members of this degree are addressed as "Sir Knight". The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism and to encourage active Catholic citizenship. Fewer than 20% of Knights join the Fourth Degree, which is optional.

Each of the four Degrees is designed to correspond and demonstrate one of the four principles of the Order: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Each Degree has it's own installation ceremony at which the core principle of the Degree is conferred upon the Knights seeking advancement in their local Council.

The Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus (more simply referred to as the Supreme Knight) is the title of the chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Knights of Columbus.
