What is a 9 line Jtac? A 9-Line is a simple concise form of communication used by a JTAC to get a cloase air support aircraft onto target. Usually it gives you an intitial point (the reference point to begin your attack from) then tells you bearing, distance and altitude of the target in relation the the initial point.

CAS is conducted when and where friendly combat forces are in close proximity to enemy forces.

As members of Air Force Special Warfare, Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) imbeds with Army and Marine units on the frontline with the incredible responsibility of calling in an air strike on the right target at just the right time.

The simple definition is that CAS is the direct support of troops on the ground by air assets. Any aircraft that can employ ordnance can do CAS. From hot air balloons in World War I to B-52s today, if it has the capability to expend some type of ordnance, it can do CAS.

Close air support (CAS) is about providing airborne firepower for troops on the ground who may be operating in close proximity to the enemy. This proximity increases the value of such characteristics as accuracy and responsiveness.

A form of fire support, CAS requires detailed integration of each air mission with fire and movement of all forces involved. CAS may be conducted using aerial bombs, glide bombs, missiles, rockets, autocannons, machine guns, and even directed-energy weapons such as lasers.

“CAS is a function vital to the mission of ground forces for successful combat at minimal cost,” the Association of the US Army said in 1993. “In the Army view, the Air Force is not greatly interested in the function and tends to neglect it in favor of strikes deeper into enemy territory.”

CAS follows a 12-step process: (1)Routing/Safety of Flight (2)CAS Aircraft Check-in (3)Situation Update (4)Game Plan (5)CAS Brief (6)Remarks/Restrictions (7)Readbacks (8)Correlation (9)Attack (10)Assess Effectiveness of the Attack (repeat steps 4-9 as necessary) (11)Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) (12)Routing/Safety of ...
