The only method that will establish a cause-and-effect relationship is an experimental research design. A true experiment must feature a control group as one of the experimental groups, along with random sampling from the population and random assignment of the study subjects to the experimental groups.

The first criterion for establishing a causal effect is an empirical (or observed) association (sometimes called a correlation) between the independent and - dent variables. They must vary together so when one goes up (or down), the other goes up (or down) at the same time.

Experiments are especially useful in determining causal relationships. 1. Experiments involve independent (factors that cause a change in something) and dependent variables (factors that are changed).

In clinical medical research, causality is demonstrated by randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Often, however, an RCT cannot be conducted for ethical reasons, and sometimes for practical reasons as well. In such cases, knowledge can be derived from an observational study instead.

To establish causality you need to show three things–that X came before Y, that the observed relationship between X and Y didn't happen by chance alone, and that there is nothing else that accounts for the X -> Y relationship.

Social Surveys One of the most used research methods in sociology is the social survey. This method involves asking participants to answer relatively simple pre-written questions. Questionnaires are excellent tools for gathering quantitative (and occasionally qualitative) primary data from large groups of people.

The “gold standard” for making a causal statement is the experiment. Scientists design a test in which one group is given a treatment of some kind, and another group, called the control group, is given no treatment.

causation. belief that events occur in predictable ways and that one event leads to another. multiple causation. believe that an event occurs as a result of several factors working in combination. variable.
