  1. Click ‘Get Form’ button to obtain the form and open it in the editor.
  2. Enter the project name in the PROJECT field to identify the associated project for the soil compaction test.
  3. Fill in the EXCAVATION NUMBER to specify the particular excavation from which the soil sample was taken.
  4. Input the DATE in the designated field to record when the test was conducted, ensuring accurate documentation.
  5. Assign a SAMPLE NUMBER to track the specific sample being tested; this is crucial for referencing results.
  6. Record the MAXIMUM DRY UNIT WEIGHT, expressed in pounds per cubic foot (pcf), in the appropriate field.
  7. Provide the SPECIFIC GRAVITY, Gs, for the soil sample being tested to give more detail on its density characteristics.
  8. Indicate the OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT, which reflects the ideal moisture level for compaction, detailing it as a percentage.
  9. Enter the DRY UNIT WEIGHT (pcf) measured during the test to complete the weight data section.
  10. Add any REMARKS in the designated space, using the back of the form if more information is needed.
  11. Document the MOISTURE CONTENT as a percentage of the dry weight in the designated section to provide a thorough record.
  12. Sign and print the TECHNICIAN's name in the signature field marked TECHNICIAN.
  13. PLOTTED BY section must be filled out and signed, confirming the integrity of the plotted data.

Typical compaction requirements for a project may range from 90% to 95% of standard Proctor for non-structural areas to 98% or more of modified Proctor for heavily loaded pavements.

ASTM D1557 Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Compaction of Soil Modified Effort -- eLearning Course. The store will not work correctly in the case when cookies are disabled.

The degree of compaction of a given soil is measured in terms of its dry density. The dry density is maximum at the optimum water content. A curve is drawn between the water content and the dry density to obtain the maximum dry density and the optimum water content.

The original Proctor test, ASTM D698 / AASHTO T99, uses a 4-inch-diameter (100 mm) mould which holds 1/30 cubic feet of soil, and calls for compaction of three separate lifts of soil using 25 blows by a 5.5 lb hammer falling 12 inches, for a compactive effort of 12,375 ft-lbf/ft3.

The standard Proctor test includes a 0.95-liter volume cylindrical mold in which the soil mass is placed and compacted in 3 layers. Each layer is compressed by dropping 25 times a 2,5 kg weight falling from an elevation of 30 centimeters.

Compaction is greatly affected by soil type, moisture content, and compaction effort and is usually test using ASTM D698. In this report it is concluded that the soil sample reaches its highest compact state when the dry unit weight is as its maximum value of 16kN/m 3 and 15% moisture content.

In general, a compaction between 80 and 85 percent of the standard Proctor maximum dry density optimizes slope stability with vegetation development and growth.

3.7 Calculate percent relative compaction by dividing the dry density of the material from the test site by that material's moisture density relation curve's maximum dry density, and multiply by 100%.
