Point of view is expressed through the author's use of pronouns, which reveal the narrator's position. In first person, the narrator uses the pronoun I throughout the writing. In second person, the narrator uses the pronoun you. In third person, the narrator uses the pronouns she/he/they/it.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that all a narrator has to do is to tell the story, to describe the events of the novel as they unfold. That's only part of it. These are the three essential functions of the narrative viewpoint: tell the story, give perspective, and make it personal.

Point of view describes the perspective from which a story is told. When writing a work of fiction, the writer must choose a narrator that will best showcase the plot of the story. There are three main types of point of view: first-person, second-person, and third-person.

Narrative point of view, perspective, or voice: the choice of grammatical person used by the narrator to establish whether or not the narrator and the audience are participants in the story; also, this includes the scope of the information or knowledge that the narrator presents.

Narrative point of view is the perspective of that narrator. First person narrative point of view occurs when the narrator is telling the story. “Call me Ismael,” the first line of Melville's novel, Moby Dick, reveals that the story will be in first person point of view.

First, second, and third person are ways of describing points of view. First person is the I/we perspective. Second person is the you perspective. Third person is the he/she/it/they perspective.

In fact, there are only five different types of narrative point of view: first-person. second-person. third-person omniscient. third-person limited. third-person objective.

If the text uses "I," "we," "me," "us," "my," "mine," or "ours" as pronouns, then you have a first-person point of view. If it uses "you," "your," or "yours" as pronouns, then you have a second-person point of view.
