The Houston toad (Anaxyrus houstonensis), formerly Bufo houstonensis, is an endangered species of amphibian that is endemic to Texas in the United States.

Adult Houston toads main food source is insects and small invertebrates. Their diet consists of ground beetles as well as a variety of small toads and ants.

Houston toad: The seasonally moist, sandy soils of the Lost Pines provide critical habitat for the endangered Houston toad. Loss of habitat in its historic range led to a marked decline in numbers of the toad in recent decades.

In 1970, the Houston Toad was the first amphibian to appear in the United States Endangered Species Act and was listed as endangered. They have been classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species since 1986. Continued habitat losses alongside severe droughts and wildfires threaten this species.

Habitat preferences include forested areas with loblolly pine, post oak, bluejack or sandjack oak, yaupon, and little bluestem. For breeding, including egg and tadpole development, Houston toads require shallow ponds or temporary water sources that persist for at least 30 days.

What is a Habitat Conservation Plan? A Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) is a planning document designed to accommodate economic development to the extent possible by authorizing the limited and unintentional take of listed species when it occurs incidental to otherwise lawful activities.
