All echinoderms have an internal support system called an endoskeleton and a large body cavity containing a set of canals called a water vascular system.

What happens if a sea star is pulled into pieces? Each piece will grow into a new animal, as long as it contains a central portion of the body.

Although echinoderms look like they have a hard exterior, they do not have an external skeleton. Instead, a thin outer skin covers an internal skeleton made of tiny plates and spines. This provides rigid support. Some groups of echinoderms, such as sea urchins (Figure below), have spines that protect the organism.

Unlike other animals, the coelom of echinoderms forms two cavities.

Echinoderms have a mesodermal skeleton in the dermis, composed of calcite-based plates known as ossicles.

Echinoderms (starfish, sea urchins and their allies) are an exception; all modern species exhibit pentaradial (five-fold) symmetry, but the phylum also possesses an extensive fossil record that includes bilateral, asymmetrical and radial forms [1,2].

Echinoderms have an internal skeleton made of bony plates (ossicles) of calcium carbonate. They deposit this material after extracting dissolved calcium and carbonate (bicarbonate) ions from sea water. In some species, such as the sea urchin, plates of the skeleton are locked together to form a rigid structure.

The bodies of echinoderms are made of hard calcium-based plates that are often spiny and always covered by a thin skin. The echinoderm skeleton is thus on the inside—called an endoskeleton.
