Interpreting a box and whiskers The first quartile (Q1) is greater than 25% of the data and less than the other 75%. The second quartile (Q2) sits in the middle, dividing the data in half. Q2 is also known as the median. The third quartile (Q3) is larger than 75% of the data, and smaller than the remaining 25%.

A box and whisker plot—also called a box plot—displays the five-number summary of a set of data. The five-number summary is the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum. In a box plot, we draw a box from the first quartile to the third quartile. A vertical line goes through the box at the median.

To construct a box plot, use a horizontal or vertical number line and a rectangular box. The smallest and largest data values label the endpoints of the axis. The first quartile marks one end of the box and the third quartile marks the other end of the box.

A box plot is constructed from five values: the minimum value, the first quartile, the median, the third quartile, and the maximum value. We use these values to compare how close other data values are to them.

We can determine whether or not a distribution is skewed based on the location of the median value in the box plot. When the median is closer to the bottom of the box and the whisker is shorter on the lower end of the box, the distribution is right-skewed (or “positively” skewed).

Plot a symbol at the median and draw a box between the lower and upper quartiles. Calculate the interquartile range (the difference between the upper and lower quartile) and call it IQ. The line from the lower quartile to the minimum is now drawn from the lower quartile to the smallest point that is greater than L1.

A box-and-whisker plot. The number line goes from 0 to 12. The whiskers range from 2 to 12, and the box ranges from 4 to 10.

The "interquartile range", abbreviated "IQR", is just the width of the box in the box-and-whisker plot. That is, IQR = Q3 − Q1 . The IQR can be used as a measure of how spread-out the values are.
